Is there an elephant buried in Waterford?

That is a question we've occasionally been asked over the years.  You might think it's one of those urban legends, but in fact, it is true.  Her name was Little Jennie, and she even appeared in the movie "Elephant Walk" with Elizabeth Taylor.  To find out what an elephant was doing in Waterford, Michigan, and what happened after she sadly expired, read the attached article which was published in the local paper at the time.

It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place. Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets. And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them.

The Gales of November, 36 years ago today

Here's a link to a good article on the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which happened on this day (November 10) in 1975. For even more information about this tragic event in Michigan's history, we have quite a few books, plus a DVD in our collection.

11/11/11

We will be closed Friday November 11 in honor of Veterans Day, a day to honor American veterans of all wars. Before 1954, Veterans Day was known as Armistice Day.  A few ideas of things you could do in honor of Veterans Day:

Read this year's Veterans Day proclamation by the President of the United States.

Decide to read a book from this list: Honoring and Remembering Veterans and Soldiers

Attend the ceremony at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly.

Visit the Waterford Township Veterans Memorial.
