Michigan Activity Pass

The Michigan Activity Pass presented by The Library Network program is a partnership between Michigan's nearly 400 public libraries and 60 arts and cultural organizations. While this new program replaces the Museum Adventure Pass program, it will work in the same way. Library patrons will use their valid library card to reserve and print a pass, either from home or the library. Then simply take the pass to the cultural attraction and present it to staff, that's all there is to it! The Michigan Activity Pass program runs from May 24, 2013 through May 23, 2014. To print a pass or view a listing of participating organizations, visit http://michiganactivitypass.info. Each activity pass expires one week from the date it is printed. Some cultural partners offer complimentary or reduced price admissions; others, discounts in their gift shop or other exclusive offers for MAP passholders only. If you haven't taken advantage of this program in the past, here is your chance to visit some of the great attractions Michigan has to offer.

Technology Update - May 2013 - Google Chrome

Image of Google Chrome logoThe latest addition to our Public Internet computers is the Google Chrome browser. If you're not familiar with Chrome, it is an Internet browser developed by Google. By many counts, Chrome is now the most widely used browser, besting Mozilla's Firefox and Microsoft's Internet Explorer browsers. The reason that we've added Google Chrome to our Internet computers is in recognition of the reality that no single browser renders every web site 100% correctly. As we've probably all experienced, some web sites just don't look or work right in one browser but work fine in another. Because the Internet browser installed on our Public Internet computers is based on Internet Explorer, the library wanted to add an alternative browser that could be used if a web site or web page didn't load or work correctly in one browser. If you haven't used Google Chrome, you'll find that it has a streamlined interface that's focused on displaying web pages. Our librarians are available to assist you in getting up to speed on using Google Chrome on our public computers.

Food for Fines

Food for FinesThanks for a Successful Drive!!

Our first drive was a wonderful success. Throughout the month of April patrons donated over 400 pounds of nonperishable food, household supplies, and personal care items either in lieu of fines or as straight donations. The Waterford Senior Center and Open Door of Waterford, both partners of Gleaners, will be the beneficiaries of your generosity.

New Computer Stations in the Children's Room

Image of AWE computersThanks to the generosity of our Friends, we have new game computers in the Children's Department.  There are two Early Literacy Stations from AWE (Advanced Workstations in Education), and two stations with specialized Internet browsers.

The Early Literacy Station (ELS) is a dynamic all-in-one digital learning solution for children ages 2-8. It is a self-contained unit requiring no Internet connection, so it is safe and secure. The educational titles are pre-loaded on the computer and are displayed using engaging graphics and intuitive menus.  But it's not just reading literacy that ELS promotes, but also proficiency in math, science & nature, social studies & geography, reading, phonics, and language arts, writing & computer skills, reference, and music & art.  Although, there are over 60 "games" loaded on the ELS computers, many of the games have more games within itself bringing the total up to 158.  Two ELS stations have replaced our old CD-ROM stations C & D.  The stations are first come, first serve.  They cannot be reserved.  Students may go on for up to an hour before being logged off.  No library card is required. The Library has ebooks

Do you have a Kindle, iPad, Nook, or Android tablet? Did you know you can borrow ebooks from the library to put on your device? You can! Go to our Download Destination site, powered by Overdrive. You'll need to be a Waterford or Lake Angelus resident, and know your library card number and pin. And you'll likely need to use the "Getting Started"/"Help" feature at the upper right part of  the Download Destination home page to see how to do it. There are help videos available to view, also. Tip: once you're ready to check something out, if you want to find something that is available for checkout right then, use the advanced search, pick your format, check off the box that says "only show titles with copies available", and then click "search".  Due to the high demand for copies of library ebooks you'll often have to place a hold and be on a waiting list for popular titles.  If you get stuck or have trouble, come on in to the adult reference desk, or give us a call - we'll do our best to help.

Public Fax Service

Picture of Fax 24 machineThe library has a new self-service public fax machine from FAX24 at the front of the library, across from the circulation desk. Voice instructions from the handset guide you through the entire transaction. You can use a VISA, Mastercard, AMEX, or Discover credit or debit card, or prepaid fax cards. The prepaid fax cards, called "faxcash", can be purchased at the circulation desk.

Faxing rates are:

  • USA: $1.50 for 1st page, $1.00 for each additional page.
  • International: $4.95 for 1st page, $3.45 for each additional page.

This fax machine only sends out-going faxes. It does not support incoming faxes.

Online Registration for Programs

Starting June 1, the Library has a new web-based system for our calendar of events. The new calendar allows you to

  • register for programs online
  • get email reminders of programs you've signed up for, and
  • cancel your registration if you are unable to attend a program

You can see how many spaces are available for programs and get automatically signed-up on a waiting list if a program is full. From the home page, select Events/Programs to access the new calendar of events. If you don't care to register yourself online, Library staff can still register you or cancel your registration over the phone or in person. (It will be easier and more streamlined for staff to use too!)
